Event Write Ups - Other Sports

These write ups show the enormous range of fundraising and raising awareness events that take place in aid of CRY.  They are a great source of ideas, and give a good indication of what various types of event involve.

Shrewsbury Triathlon - 4th September 2011
On Sunday the 4th September 2011 Rosie Edwards took part in the Shrewsbury Triathlon.  "I did the triathlon yesterday and managed to complete it as I had hoped, YAY!! and PHEW!!! lol. The river swim was what I was looking forward to the most, id never done a triathlon all on my own before (iv done a tandem triathlon twice) and id never swam in open water in a competition before, so it was pretty exciting."

Charity Cricket Match in memory of Gary Steven Martin - 29th August 2011
The late August bank holiday was enjoyed by all at the charity cricket match held in the memory of Gary Steven Martin.  The event was held at the Hornchurch Cricket Club and there were four teams involved and even the weather was good for a bank holiday!

Ironman UK Triathlon in memory of Gregory Palmer - 31st July 2011
On Sunday the 31st July Alistair Palmer took part in the Ironman UK Triathlon in memory of his older brother Gregory.

Liverpool Olympic Distance Triathlon in memory of Josh Dillon - 26th June 2011

On 26th June 2011 I completed the Liverpool Olympic distance Triathlon, in memory of Josh Dillon, in 2hrs 27min 02sec!

CRY Crusaders, Farnham 7s - 30th April 2011
The CRY Crusaders survived a long day at Farnham RFC remaining unbeaten throughout the day to pick up the Main Winners trophy.

CRY Crusaders, Wanstead 7s - 17th April 2011
The CRY Crusaders had an excellent showing in their first tournament of the year at Wanstead, reaching the final of the main competition.

The David Green Memorial Hockey Match - 20th March 2011
Middleton & Bognor Men's 1st XI - David's team - played a charity hockey match against an invitational side comprising local England, South of England and Sussex players.  The day also featured a barbecue and charity auction, with all proceeds being donated to CRY.

Charity cricket tournament in memory of Emlyn Wibberley - 4th September 2010
Funds for CRY were raised from members of Putney Cricket Club at a 7-a-side intra-club cricket tournament held on Saturday 4th September 2010 on Putney Lower Common.

Charity cricket match in memory of Dale Tennent-Butler - 30th August 2010
August Bank Holiday Monday saw a charity cricket match take place at Langleybury Cricket Club, to raise funds for CRY in memory of Dale Tennent-Butler.  The day also featured a barbecue, raffle and live music.

Charity 24 Hour Tennis and Karaoke event - 28th August 2010
Burnley Tennis Club held their 3rd Annual 24 Hour Tennis and Karaoke event on the 28th August 2010 to raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).  The event is named after the Coach's late wife Vicki Taylor, and all the funds raised go to CRY.

Charity cricket match in memory of Simon Hewett - 24th July 2010
On Saturday 24th July Simon's friends held their fifth annual cricket match at Stowe, Simon's old school. Three teams competed, one representing his old school, one from Oxford Brookes, his old university, and by invitation a family team.

Charity cricket match in memory of Jack Boulton - 4th July 2010
The Keynsham U25's played the Celebrity XI in a charity cricket match.  This was played in very good spirits and raised £2,000 in aid of CRY in memory of Jack. 

Varsity Series: University of Nottingham versus Nottingham Trent University - February to June 2010
It began as a few friendly matches between respective teams and has grown to a head-to-head competitive series organised by two Athletic Unions. The Varsity Series now spans the whole of the second semester with 14 matches in 10 different sports. CRY was chosen as the charity to be supported for the 2010 series, in memory of former University of Nottingham student Neil Desai, who died suddenly in September 2008, aged 22.

London Duathlon in memory of Amanda McCarthy - 13th September 2009
Pete McCarthy and Dave Bentley entered the challenging London Duathlon in the pleasant surroundings of Richmond Park, to raise money for CRY in memory of Pete's daughter, Amanda.

Charity clay target shoot - 3rd January 2009

Around 75 competitors took part in a charity clay target shoot to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Amanda McCarthy.  The day also featured a raffle and refreshments.

Robert Lancaster Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot - 10th September 2008

100 shooters took part in this fundraising event in memory of Robert Lancaster.  As well as the clay pigeon shoot, the event featured lunch and 2 auctions (regular and silent) - with some great prizes donated by various companies.

"Stars in the Club's Eyes" and Family Fun Day in memory of Stevie Wiggins - April / May 2008

Money was raised for the Stevie Wiggins Memorial Fund within CRY, through two events held at Preston Grasshoppers rugby club - a "Stars in the Club's Eyes" talent show; and a Family Fun Day (the latter combined with a rugby match).

CRY Tennis Tournament - 14th April 2008

Despite gloomy weather predictions, Haslemere Lawn Tennis Club (HLTC) held an extremely successful junior doubles tournament in aid of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) on Monday 14th April.

Sponsored netball match in memory of Sarah Simpson - 28th October 2007

Friends and family of Sarah Simpson took part in a sponsored netball match to raise money for CRY.

Annual Motor Cycle Trials School - August 2007

The Luckett family ran their annual motor cycle trials school, with 65 riders taking part in the training.  This was the 16th time the family have run the event, and for the third year the event was held in memory of Martyn Luckett.

Kent Ravens RLFC donates money to CRY - August 2007

Vicki Bacon and the Donnelly family represented the Kent Ravens Rugby League Football Club as a cheque was presented to CRY at the team's Princes Park Stadium.  CRY supporters Phil and Robert Eastty kindly attended to collect the cheque.

Charity Basketball Match - 18th May 2007

This annual game between Lisburn Basketball Club and Bangor Basketball Club is played in memory of Nicholas Collins.

Charity Rugby Match and Family Fun Day - 12th May 2007

The 3rd Annual Family Fun Day in memory of Stevie Wiggins was held at Preston Grasshoppers RFC on Saturday 12th of May.  The day featured a charity rugby match, followed by a hog roast, bouncy castle and other attractions.

'The People's Race' charity horserace - April 2007

CRY supporter Janine Patchcott has been raising awareness of CRY in her bid to take part in a charity amateur horserace - 'The People's Race' - at Aintree on the same weekend as the world famous Grand National.  Janine was one of 3500 people who applied through the Daily Mirror for a chance to take part in the world's most famous horseracing meeting, in a competition sponsored by John Smiths. These applications were whittled down to a shortlist of 30 people, who were then assessed on their fitness and riding skills.

Charity Rugby match in memory of Sebastian English - 25th March 2007

Sunday 25th March saw the 3rd Annual Sebastian English Memorial Match played at Haslemere Rugby Club.  Sebastian was a young man who tragically died from an undiagnosed heart condition whilst playing rugby for Haslemere in 2004. This yearly tribute day continues to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Charity Rugby match in memory of Kasia Ber - 27th December 2006

Horden Rugby Club played a charity match against Seaton Carew, to raise money for CRY in memory of Kasia Ber.

7th Annual Weary Traveller Bowling Day - 28th August 2005

This year's bowling day at the Weary Traveller Inn in Kidderminster, was opened by Peter Dyke, the Lord Mayor of Kidderminster.  As well as bowling, the event featured a raffle, a barbecue, an auction, a sponsored 'head shave' and much more.

1,000,000m Rowathon - Summer 2004
Bob Bailey will row 1,000,000 metres fundraising in memory of his nephew Damian Kosten who tragically lost his life to Cardiomyopathy aged 23

The Weary Traveller Annual Bowling Day

The 6th annual event held at the Weary Traveller pub in Kidderminster.  The day featured lawn bowls, a barbecue, balloon race, auction and a raffle.

Sutton Tennis Day
The three day event featured a sponsored inter-club doubles tournament with Owen Davidson, Frew McMillan, Mark Cox, John Inverdale, Ken Rosewall,  Mike Walker, Geoff Masters, and Fred Stolle, a kids tennis clinic, and an Auction night with Bob Champion. Over £15,000 was raised.
