Event Write Ups - Walks and Treks

These write ups show the enormous range of fundraising and raising awareness events that take place in aid of CRY.  They are a great source of ideas, and give a good indication of what various types of event involve.

CRY Durham Riverside Walk - 8th October 2011

Congratulations and thank you to the 144 participants (plus dogs in CRY t-shirts!) who took part in the 2nd CRY Durham Riverside Walk on Saturday 8th October 2011 to launch CRY Awareness Week ( 8th -16th October). The numbers taking part this year were more than double those of 2010, thanks to the efforts of our supporters who actively promoted the event.

The Ollie Marsden Memorial Fun Run/Walk/Cycle/Scooter - 2nd October 2011
Alan Jordan arranged a fun run/walk on Sunday 2nd October in memory of his nephew Ollie Marsden for friends and family to attend.

Mount Snowdon Climb in memory of Natalie Herbert - 10th September 2011
24 friends and family members climbed Mount Snowdon on the 10th September in memory of Natalie Herbert and raised an amazing £6201.81 in sponsorship.

HAVOC Youth Group Climb Mount Snowdon - 9th August 2011
This summer, a group of thirteen teenagers gave up a day of their holidays to get together for a sponsored walk in aid of CRY.  On August 9th, members of the HAVOC youth group from Grace Community Church, Kempston, climbed up Snowdon to raise as much as possible for CRY.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk 2011 - 17th July 2011
The 5th CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk on Sunday 17th July was led by CRY supporters Anne & Trefor Thomas from Llantrisant, Wales and their friends.  An amazing 767 adults, children and dogs registered to take part this year including 99 people who registered on the day.

Fathers and Sons 3 Peaks Challenge in memory of Howard and Sebastian English - 3rd & 4th July 2011
On July 3rd and 4th 2011 four fathers and sons completed the 3 Peaks challenge for CRY in memory of Howard and Sebastian English.

Zurich Team take on Rutland Water Challenge in memory of Lewis Barry - 16th May 2011

On Monday 16 May, 50 intrepid Risk Engineers and Zurich M Sales staff from all over the UK took on the challenge of Rutland Water in memory of Lewis Barry and to raise funds for CRY - and won! The cyclists circumnavigated the 17 miles around the reservoir - some chose to add the 6 mile island for good measure.  Walkers and runners took on the 10k route across the dam and back.

Red Watch: Eastbourne Fire and Rescue Service South Downs Walk - 4th to 7th May 2011
Eastbourne firefighters raised £4,500 during a charity walk in memory of Luke Meekings - the nephew of the crew manager - who died aged just 24. The 100-mile walk raised funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young and the Fire Fighters Charity.

Coast to Coast Walk in memory of Tom Morgan - 16th to 28th April 2011

Ian Jackson will be doing the 191-mile Coast-to-Coast walk starting on Saturday 16th April 2011 in memory of his wife's son - Tom Morgan - who sadly died on 15th June 2009 of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome at the age of 30 years.

Chardonay, Brandon, Corrina and Destiny undertook a 4 mile sponsored walk to raise funds and awareness for CRY

Joanne Urch treks the Sahara for CRY - November 2010

Joanne Urch, from Chelston, said she is still nursing her blisters after the nine-day trek to raise more than £4,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young.

 

Nepal Trek - November 2010
Julie Rawling tackled the gruelling Nepal Trek challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of her brother Darren Rawling.

CRY Durham Riverside Walk - 9th October 2010
We would like to say a huge thank you to the 70 participants (plus dogs in CRY t-shirts!) who took part in the first CRY Durham Riverside Walk on Saturday 9th October 2010.  We held this new event to help mark CRY’s 15th anniversary and to launch CRY Awareness Week (9th - 17th October).

Peru Trek in memory of Debbie Suau-Marcus - 24th September to 3rd October 2010
Claire Suau-Marcus completed the challenging Peru Trek to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of her sister Debbie, who died suddenly of SADS aged just 24.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk 2010 - 18th July 2010
The 2010 CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk took place on Sunday 18th July, once again led by CRY Patron Kathryn Harries.  Over 800 adults, children and dogs took part in this annual event, making it the biggest one yet!

Family and friends of Richard 'Rich' Tomkins took part in the 2010 CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk in his memory.

CRY Bridges Walk in memory of Ronnie Armitage - 18th July 2010
The Armitage family entered the 2010 CRY Bridges Walk to raise money for CRY in memory of Ronnie Armitage.

South West Coast path in memory of Alice Lyte - 8th July to 19th August 2010
Jacob Smith walked the 630 mile South West Coast path to raise funds and awareness for CRY in memory of close friend Alice Lyte. 

"Village People" sponsored walk - 30th June 2010
Georgie Ambrose, Nidhin Laji, Jack Hillcox, Charlie Fergus and Angus Walker tackled a gruelling 54 mile sponsored walk dressed as The Village People, to raise money and awareness for CRY.

Just Walk 2010, 60km route - 15th May 2010
Antony Eames and his sister Rachel Bellon took part in the Just Walk 2010 event, opting to tackle the most challenging 60km route along the South Downs Way.  Antony is a founder member of CRY's Surgery Supporters Network, having been diagnosed with long QT syndrome when he was 12 years old.

Coast to Coast Challenge in memory of Kerry-Anne Offord - 14th to 27th May 2010
Will Wilkin, Leon Ross and Emma Ross undertook a 200 mile trek across Scotland to raise funds for CRY in memory of Kerry-Anne Offord.

100 kilometre walk - 7th to 8th May 2010
Alex Boden and Chris Gann set out to walk 100 kilometres in under 24 hours, to raise money and awareness for CRY.

The Sarsen Trail, sponsored walk in memory of Jack Boulton - 2nd May 2010
The Rotork Red Socks battled the wind and rain to complete the Sarsen Trail, a 26 mile walk between Avebury stones and Stonehenge, to raise money for CRY in memory of Jack.

Marathon Walk - 24th October 2009
CRY representative Martin “The Hips” Appleby and his friend Billy “The KitKat Kid”, walked a marathon on Saturday 24th October 2009 to raise awareness and funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young.

3 Peaks Challenge in memory of Simon McNamara - 18th & 19th September 2009
Friends and family of Simon McNamara tackled the gruelling 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Simon.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 26th July 2009
Over 600 CRY supporters (and dogs!) from around the country joined CRY patron Kathryn Harries for the 3rd annual CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk.

West Highland Way walk in memory of Robert O'Kane - 8th to 14th June 2009
Friends and family of Robert O'Kane completed the 98 mile West Highland Way walk to raise money and awareness for CRY in Robert's memory.

Three Peaks Challenge and Pigeon Racing Night in memory of Harvey Hague-Armitage - May 2009
Two very different fundraising events were held in May 2009 to raise funds for the Harvey-Hague Armitage Memorial Fund within CRY.  Firstly, a team of climbers successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge; and secondly, a Pigeon Racing Night was held.

St Jean Pied de Port to Cap Finisterre walk - February / March 2009
Mark Luscombe-Whyte undertook an
800km walk from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, to raise money for CRY.

Kilimanjaro Climb in memory of Jack Rae - September 2008
Helen Brisco and Megan Rae climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for CRY in memory of Megan's brother Jack.

Prism Architectural 3 Peaks Challenge - August 2008

Jonathan Simpson and colleagues from Prism Architectural completed the 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY and for the Prostate Cancer Charity.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 20th July 2008

Following the success of CRY's inaugural Heart of London Bridges Sponsored Walk in 2007 the event took place again in 2008, with over 600 CRY supporters in attendance.  CRY Patron Kathryn Harries once again led the walk, crossing 8 London bridges - each bridge representing one of the 8 fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) who die suddenly each week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions.

Great North Walk - 29th June 2008

Dawn Sanderson and Mark Brown completed the Great North Walk to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Kasia Ber.

South West Walk in memory of Robert Lancaster - 21st May to 6th July 2008

Graham Keene undertook this 630-mile walk in memory of Robert Lancaster, the son of good friends, who very sadly collapsed and died whilst skiing with his parents in 2007.

Just Walk 2008 in memory of Matthew Reid - 10th May 2008

Karen Griffiths, Denise Roberts and Chris Smith-Page tackled a 60km sponsored walk to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Matthew Reid.

Sponsored walk in memory of David Cochrane - 3rd May 2008

Lodge Hopetoun St. John No. 1232, a small Masonic Lodge located in Linlithgow, West Lothian, organised a 15-mile sponsored walk from “The Falkirk Wheel” to Linlithgow.  This is the third year in a row that the Lodge has held fundraising events for CRY in memory of Lodge member David Cochrane, who died suddenly in 2006 aged just 22.

Breathing Space Charity Walk for CRY - 25th November 2007

Breathing Space Spa & Studio organised an 8-mile sponsored walk to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Hannah Turberville.

Dominican College Annual Sponsored Walk - 28th September 2007

Mr John Lundy, The Divisional Representative for Cardiac Risk in The Young (CRY) in Northern Ireland, was pleased today to accept a cheque for £2000 raised by the pupils and friends of Dominican College as part of the 2007 Annual Sponsored Walk.

Aimee Norman organised a sponsored walk to raise money and awareness for CRY, in memory of her boyfriend Christopher Dixon.

Peru Trek in memory of Brian Lennon - August 2007

Lynn Foster undertook the challenging Peru Trek to raise money for CRY and the Irish Heart Foundation in memory of her boyfriend Brian Lennon.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk in memory of Martyn Luckett - 15th July 2007

Brenda Luckett was joined by several members of the Luckett family (and extended family) on the CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk, to raise money and awareness in memory of Brenda's son Martyn.

3-day Trek in the Alps - 15th to 17th July

John Hewett, Brian Wreford, Jonathan Garner and John Murgatroyd undertook a 3-day trek in the French Alps to raise money for CRY in memory of John Hewett's son Simon.

Three Peaks Challenge in memory of Kasia Ber - 14th to 15th July 2007

Dave Foster, Paul Lutz, Martin Alexander and Alan Summerson undertook the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Kasia Ber.  Kasia's father John is a friend and colleague of the four intrepid fundraisers.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 15th July 2007

Lewis Scott, aged 9 - son of CRY Patron Andy Scott - gives his account of the CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk, which he completed along with his family.

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk - 7th and 15th July 2007

On July 15th, CRY Patron Kathryn Harries was joined by over 400 CRY supporters on a sponsored walk crossing 8 bridges from Westminster to Tower Bridge.  The 8 bridges each signified one of the 8 apparently 'fit and healthy' young people who die every week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions. 

Three Peaks Challenge in memory of Howard and Sebastian English - 17th to 18th June 2007

Five teams successfully completed the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge and raised over £100,000 for CRY in memory of Howard and Sebastian English.

Three Peaks Challenge in memory of Kim Wheating - 8th June 2007

Philippa Railing and a team of girls undertook the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for CRY in memory of Philippa's friend, Kim Wheating.

West Highland Way in memory of Kevin Stentaford - 22nd to 27th April 2007

Roy and Carol Stentaford were joined by 5 friends in tackling the West Highland Way in Scotland.  The walk was to raise money and awareness for CRY in memory of Roy and Carol's son Kevin, who died suddenly whilst playing football in 2001, aged just 20

CRY Patron Simon Halliday joins 'Botham Walk 2006' - October 2006

Ian Botham has been undertaking a series of walks through 17 UK cities in 9 days, to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund and the Teenage Cancer Trust.  Ian invited CRY to join him for one of the city-walks, and so Simon Halliday donned a CRY Heart costume and accompanied Ian through Oxford on the 16th of October. 

Great Wilderness Challenge - 18th & 19th August 2006

Ullapool Air Cadets presented a cheque to CRY Representative Alex Fotheringham, after once again completing the Great Wilderness Challenge in the Scottish Highlands.

Charity Walk in memory of Levon Morland - 23rd April 2006

Over 70 people took part in this annual event organised by Sandra Morland in memory of her son Levon, who died in January 2002 from Wolfe Parkinson White Syndrome.

Eildon Hills Challenge - 23rd April 2006

David Gordon completed this sponsored walk to raise money for CRY in memory of his son Ewan.

Mark Fox's Sahara Desert Trek - 13th to 21st March 2006

CRY Publications Co-ordinator Mark Fox trekked 100km in the Sahara Desert to raise money for CRY in memory of his sister Laura.  Mark battled baking desert days, chilly desert nights, sandstorms and blisters to complete this epic journey.

Coast-to-coast walk along the Wainwright route - 30th July to 6th August 2005

James Owens, Andy Blackett and Adam O’Byrne spent 8 days walking across England, passing through some of the country's most stunning and challenging terrain.

3 Peaks Challenge in memory of Andy Gard

Steve Sparkes and friends attempt to climb Snowdonia, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis - the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland - all within 24 hours. 

And they're off over the coals

Fire Walk
David Gregory took up the Fire Walk challenge and hoped to raise a couple of hundred pounds for Cardiac Risk in the Young using only online sponsorship with a personal fundraising Web page.

“It was the most horrendous thing any of us had ever done.  The elements were against us and by the time we finished we had gone 40 hours without sleep.  But it was worth it, and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who sponsored us.”

The Snowdon Climb
John participated in a hike up Snowden which Linda helped organise in memory of their son Andrew Blow who died while playing football for his University Hall of Residence football team on May 10th 1998.  The climb was blessed with good weather and so successful that John hopes to do it again.
