Fundraising tribute to Gareth

Pontypridd & Llantrisant Observer -  31st July 2008

A Llantrisant family travelled to London for an emotional fundraising walk in memory of their son.

Anne and Trevor Thomas wanted to raise awareness for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) after losing their son Gareth, 21, to an undiagnosed cardiac illness in his sleep in February last year.

The Thomases thanked friends and neighbours for helping them raise a 'staggering' £3,000 for the charity on the day and a total of £10,000 overall.

The annual fundraising event saw families, supporters and those affected by by tragic, sudden cardiac deaths of under 35s to join in an 8km walk across eight of London's most famous bridges.

CRY's newest patron is Little Britain comedian, David Walliams, who said: "I know I'm a bit of a fan of extreme sports but you don't have to cross the channel or swim through shark infested waters to help make a difference."

The charity is heavily involved in lobbying for greater access to screening for young people (especially those who regularly take part in sporting activities) and now provides medical equipment and a subsidised screening programme around the UK.
