A
campaign to bring a lifesaving heart unit to North Wales has received a
significant boost.
Doreen
Harley is striving to raise more than £6,000 for a screening session to
test youngsters for signs of undiagnosed heart conditions, one of which
killed her daughter.
The
CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) campaigner was overwhelmed when
ScottishPower offered to make a donation of £1,000 towards the worthy
cause.
‘I
am absolutely delighted.’ She said.
‘And I hope it encourages other local businesses in the community
to come forward and help us.’
The
community has rallied round to help the appeal which was launched by Alyn
and Deeside MP, Mark Tami in the Chronicle.
A jazz
afternoon at the Miners Arms in Maeshafn started the fundraising ball
rolling by raising a staggering £3,000 towards the appeal.
Mr
Tami was so touched by the Connah’s Quay fundraiser’s efforts he
recently nominated her for the woman of the year title in this year’s Chronicle-ScottishPower
Your Champions Awards.
Despite
losing her daughter Lisa, who suffered from Long QT syndrome, a major
cause of Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young at the age of 27, Doreen is
battling to help save other young lives.
‘If
we can save just one life and prevent any other family suffering the
tragedy we have endured, the campaign will have been successful.’
The
fundraising target of £6,666 will enable 37 youngsters to be screened on
a first come, first served basis over one weekend.
It
will involve numerous tests and a consultation with a cardiologist.
Jan
Cahill, ScottishPower communications executive, handed the cheque to
Doreen last week.
‘We
are delighted to donate £1,000 to this worthwhile campaign as part of our
commitment to the local community,’ she said.
‘Following
our contribution, we were also pleased to hear that Doreen has been put
forward for the Chronicle-ScottishPower Your Champions Awards and wish her every
luck in her nomination |
