Dr Sanjay Sharma appointed Professor of Inherited Cardiovascular Disease and Sports Cardiology at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust

Sanjay will be taking up his appointment on February 2^nd 2010 – at the start of  CRY’s 15th anniversary year – and it is poignant that Sanjay should be returning to the hospital where he took his final exams to become a consultant; and where he first linked up with CRY and declared his interest in this complicated field of medicine. 

St George’s was also the first hospital in the UK to develop a family screening clinic after CRY’s donation of echocardiogram equipment established a specialist clinic in young sudden cardiac death and meant that whole families could be screened together after a tragedy.   

Sanjay will spearhead the new Inherited Cardiovascular Disease and Sports Cardiology centre at St George's, which will combine three essential features of CRY’s mission to eliminate young (aged 35 and under) sudden cardiac death - offering services for 'affected families', competitive athletes and the general population.

The new centre will provide a ‘one stop shop’ for young people and ‘affected families’ who wish to be screened for potentially life-threatening cardiac problems.  Professor Sharma and the new centre will also be central to CRY's new screening initiative - to offer screening to every 14-year-old across the South East born in 1995 (the year that CRY was founded).
