Events held for Raising Awareness Week 2008

• Heather Harber had an information stand in Swanley town centre (Kent) on October 1st, in memory of Charlie Morettes

• Nick Dee-Shapland arranged for a CRY page to appear in the programme for the Newbury Nomads' shows on the 1st to 4th October at the Newbury Corn Exchange

• Lesley Johnstone held a 'Coffee and Cake' event at Pheonix Farm in Hertfordshire, on 3rd October.  The event was in memory of Caroline Johnstone

• James Brown gave a presentation at a school assembly in Sevenoaks, on 3rd October

• Joanne Gates and Tamzin Langdon were cutting hair and holding a raffle on 5th October in Stevenage

• Heather Harber organised a rollerskating event between Swanley and the O2 Arena in London, on 5th October

• Rosemary Attridge held a 'Bring and Buy' stall for CRY on 6th October

• Ruth Lowe held an information stand as part of Myerscough Agricultural College's 'wellbeing week'.  Ruth also provided CRY with a quiz that was sold by CRY supporters throughout October

• Joseph Tanner manned a CRY information stand in Brighton for Raising Awareness Week (10th to 18th October), and was also involved in a leg-waxing event

• Mary Abraham had an information stand in Southampton for Raising Awareness Week (10th to 16th October)

• Benita Davies displayed literature and posters around her workplace and on notice boards during Raising Awareness Week (10th to 18th October), in a hospital in Birmingham

• Pat Staniland manned an information stand outside Tesco in Nottingham during Raising Awareness Week

• Sue Jarvis had an information stand outside Asda in Clayton Green during Raising Awareness Week

• Nick Dee-Shapland had an information stand at Newbury Rugby Club during Raising Awareness Week

• Sharen Stables increased the year-round promotion of CRY that she does in her and her friends' shops

• Sally Clarke displayed CRY literature and posters around the Cheshire area for Raising Awareness Week

• Barbara and Gareth Ingerfield had an information stand outside Asda in Milton Keynes from 10th to 18th October.  Gareth also did a parachute jump and organised a 'Dress Down Day' at the local branch of Abbey National

• Tara Gore displayed CRY literature at a local funeral director during Raising Awareness Week

• Janice Wand manned an information stand in the foyer of Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, from October 10th to 18th

• Alison Blairmount raised awareness at her child's school from 10th to 18th October

• Rob Griffiths arranged for Channel 5 News to do a piece on CRY during Raising Awareness Week

• Rebekah Barnard did a charity skydive for CRY on 11th October at Swansea Airport.  She was jumping in memory of Craig Daniel Powell

• Claire Thomason took part in the CRY Parachute Jump Day on 12th October.  After the jump, Claire had an information stall at her local pub, to raise further awareness of CRY

• Richard Abraham, Jo Bulman and Toni Newton also took part in the CRY Parachute Jump Day

• Rachel Hooper organised the Daniel Young Memorial Football Tournament on 14th October, at Pendleton College, Salford

• Paula Otton had an information table in St. Govan's Shopping Centre, Pembroke Dock, on 14th October

• CRY Supporter Carly Skyes helped to organise a 'Black, White and Diamonds Ball' on Saturday 18^th October at the Bluebirds Restaurant Banqueting Suite, Dover, Kent - in aid of CRY and Cancer Research UK

• Francesca Griffin organised a Quiz Night for CRY at Staines Prep School on 18th October.  The event was in memory of Oliver Griffin

• Sue Entwistle (on behalf of Vanessa Clark and Ray Duxbury) held a Charity Evening on 18th October in memory of Vanessa and Ray's daughter, Becky

• Sylvia Pezzack held a coffee morning, soup and roll lunch, and awareness talk in the afternoon, at the Mousehole Methodist Church Hall in Penzance on 18th October.  This was in memory of Deborah Louise Rendle

• Mark Fox organised his annual ‘Red CRY at Night’ event – with proceeds from the event equally split between CRY and Macmillan Cancer Support. The event was on Saturday 18th October and the theme was a Funky Dance Party through the ages from the 70s to today

• Rosemary Attridge held a screening event and information stall at the Reigate Manor Hotel, on 19th October

• Deborah Anderson had a Charity Barrow in the Blue Mall Metro Centre, Dunston, Tyne & Wear, on 19th October

• Mrs S Curtis organised a Charity Ploughing Match at Pear Tree Farm, Aldwincle, on 19th October

• Joseph Tanner organised a Dolly Parton night at the 'Latest' music bar in Brighton on 21st October

• Liz Donaghy and Daniel Polak organised a Fundraising Study Day at Welbeck College, Lancashire, on 23rd October

• Martin Appleby organised a 'Beatle Mania' evening at the Cross Keys Pub (London) on 25th October

• Craig McIntyre organised a cider and homebrew tasting event, at Fylde Rugby Club in Lytham St. Annes, on 25th October.  The event was in memory of Stevie Wiggins

• Marilyn Cullum manned an information stall in the foyer of the Asda store in Great Yarmouth on 25th October.  This was in memory of Simon Jon Cullum

• Joanne Gates and Tamzin Langdon organised a 5-a-side football tournament and charity auction on 26th October.  The events were in memory of Joe Langdon, and took place at Bottles Public House and the Odyssey Fitness Club.  Special thanks to Odyssey Fitness for providing 3 pitches and a green room free of charge.

• Rosemary Attridge organised a charity ball at the Reigate Manor Hotel on 31st October, in memory of Stuart Attridge

• Sue and Lisa Williams organised a Halloween Fancy Dress Ball at The Pavillion (Heathrow) on 31st October.  The event was in memory of David and Steve Williams

• Mrs K Prout raised awareness throughout October at her place of work

• Jan Payling distributed posters and contacted the local media, to promote CRY throughout October

Here are some of the ways in which you can help during future Raising Awareness Weeks:     

• Team up with family, friends or colleagues and organise a fundraising event in your local area - either during Raising Awareness Week or some time during the month of October. We can send you a fundraising pack, which includes an A to Z of fundraising ideas, or check out our Past Events section for inspiration!
• Organise and man an information stand in your local shopping centre, health club, leisure centre or any other club where you are a member.
• If you are a longstanding supporter of CRY and feel confident enough, you could give a short talk about CRY at your club or society, as well as displaying our literature and having a collection box for donations. On request, we can provide you with a CD containing a CRY PowerPoint presentation.

If you don’t have time to organise or take part in any of the above, but would still like to help raise awareness of CRY you could:

• distribute some CRY postcards relevant to your region for sending to MPs

• ask local shops, clubs, societies, gyms, pubs, etc in your area if they will put up a poster promoting CRY

Important Notes

• Most Local Authorities do not require you to have a licence to hand out literature or sell merchandise, provided you are representing a registered charity, although you might want to confirm this with your own Local Authority if you intend to do this sort of thing.

• If you are thinking of holding a raffle on your stall or at an event, we would be pleased to give you the details of our Licence Number, and also some general guidelines for running raffles.

• Should you decide to organise an information stand, permission will be required from the relevant authority - e.g. Local Authority, shopping centre manager, manager of gym, etc.  It is important that you get permission for your stand from whoever has authority over your intended venue.
