The family of a young man from Hale who died from
a heart condition is aiming to prevent others from suffering the same
anguish.
Ben Crean, 28, died of a massive heart attach in
October 2006.
Although he knew he had a heart condition it was
not believed to have been life threatening.
After his death, his parents Jenni and Nick and
sister Amy, 27, set up the Ben Crean Trust in his honour.
Since then they have organised a series of
fundraisers in memory of lifelong Hale resident and have contributed £14,000
to a number of charities.
Now, working with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)
they are aiming to provide a mobile screening unit that can pinpoint any
undetected heart defects in youngsters.
The fund has £6,000 in its coffers and the family
aims to raise another £15,000 to get the screening unit on the road.
Ben's mother Jenni, from Altrincham, said: "We
want to prevent other families from going through what we have had to.
Young people die of sudden heart failure all the time."
She said the former Knutsford High School pupil
Ben had a great zest for life. "He was a very active lad. He was
very charismatic, a leader and a wonderful support to family and friends -
everyone was drawn to him."
Ben was a chartered account for Manchester firm
CTP Limited and the company helped Ben's family establish the
fund.
Fundraisers this year include an annual walk on
May 14 at the Wirral; BUPA 10K Manchester Run on May 15; a golf tournament
at Northenden Golf Club in July; a summer fashion show; and a celebration
evening at Bowdon Rugby Club on November 12.
Causes that have benefited from donations from the
Ben Crean Trust are the Prince's Trust, which Ben helped as an ambassador;
the Teenage Care Trust, Cardiac Risk in the Young and Salford Royal
Hospital's intensive care unit, where Ben received treatment and which will
also benefit from this year's fundraisers.
