£2400 raised and pub team are the tug champions

Sheerness Times Guardian - 1st September 2005

Money raised during a charity Memorial Day has been given to three charities.

Those to benefit from the £2,400 included Demelza House children’s hospice, at Bobbing, Preston Skreens respite care centre in Minster and the national charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young, with each receiving £800.

The event in Clyde Street in August was in memory of Charlotte Wright who died of heart failure at the age of eight while on a school adventure holiday at Hindhead in May 2002.

Events included a tug-of-war featuring 12 teams, including one from the Blacksmith’s Arms pub, whose staff helped to organise the day.

The Blacksmiths team won the event which also featured a contingent of Sheppey Zulus and Sheppey Pirates.

Charlotte’s mum Karen Williams said: “The tug of war team were presented with a trophy as well.  I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the event and also to Tina McCarthy, who worked really hard.

“Next year’s event is going to be the biggest and best yet.  The pirates and Zulus have already agreed to support it.”
