Charity fun day in Charlotte's name

Sheerness Times Guardian - 15th July 2004

A fund-raising event held in memory of a schoolgirl who died suddenly has raised around £1,500 for charity.

The Blacksmith’s Arms pub in Clyde Street, Sheerness, was transformed into an activity madhouse for a day as customers took part in a series of ways of raising money.

It was in aid of three charities, Demelza House, Preston Skreens and Cardiac Risk for the Young (CRY), and in memory of Charlotte Wright.

She was eight years old when she collapsed and died of sudden heart failure as she climbed a tree during a school adventure holiday two years ago.

Her mother, Karen Williams, from Alma Road, Sheerness, organised the charity day and was delighted with its outcome.

She said: “It went absolutely splendidly, the pub was packed and it was the best ever event.

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported it and helped organise it or gave prizes  - there were so many people involved.”

The activities on Sunday, July 4, included a barbecue, a pool competition, raffles, face painting, a buffet, a Mr and Mrs competition and a look-a-like competition to find the closest double for landlord Mark Black.

Customers also raised money through a music stage where they paid money to get people to stop performing and there was a prize for the worst player in the pool competition.

Mrs Williams added: “There should have been a men’s wet T-shirt contest but they chickened out because they said it was too cold.”
