Swansea’s
new Lord Mayor Mair Gibbs has talked passionately about her plans to help the
city’s young people during her year of office.
That aim is reflected in the
choice of charities she will promote over the next 12 months.
“My year as Lord Mayor will be
all about helping our young people, tomorrow’s generation,” she told guests at
an inauguration ceremony in the Brangwyn Hall.
“I intend to support our local
branch of Cardiac Risk in the Young. The money will help to purchase
equipment relating to heart treatment for young people.
“I also intend to set up a
trust fund to raise funds for groups and organisations who work with young
people with special needs.”
She added: “I have served the
Bonymaen ward as a councillor for 20 years and, at last, I have achieved the
greatest honour of all.
“I will now have the
opportunity to promote and help our wonderful city.”
Councillor Gibbs was handed
the chain of office by outgoing Lord Mayor Margaret Smith, watched by many
guests. During her term of office her consort will be her husband of 51
years, Geoffrey. Council leader Chris Holey was elected her deputy.
