A health expert spearheading research into Sudden
Unexpected Deaths Syndrome (Suds) has been sharing his knowledge in the House
of Commons.
Professor Mark Rees, of
Swansea School of Medicine, was invited to a parliamentary reception organised
by the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity last week.
The Professor Neurological and
Cardiac Genetics said: “Research into this syndrome has implications for
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy
Patients.
“In Wales, we are in
consultation with cardiac clinicians, coroners and forensic pathologist to set
up a network to integrate molecular genetics diagnostics for sudden death
victims with no indication of cause of death at autopsy.”
Around 800 young adults in the
UK under the age of 30 die because of Suds each year.
Professor Rees has returned to
Wales after working in New Zealand.
