In the fashion stakes, footballers kick rugby players into touch...

South Wales Evening Post - 22nd October 2005

By Leon Watson

Swans players have put the Ospreys in the shade in a fashion show at the city’s new Liberty Stadium.

Players from the Swans and the Ospreys took the stage in a catwalk battle to raise cash for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund.

But most of the audience agreed, the Swans, accompanied by models as they strutted their stuff, came out on top in the fashion stakes.  Most opted for razor-sharp suits while the rugby boys went for a casual look.

Crowd favourite Lee Trundle, Wales International Sam Ricketts and defenders Izzy Iriekpen and Garry Monk were among the Swans stars to turn out for the bash in their own clothes.

And the Ospreys fielded Richie Pugh, Leigh Davies and Huw Bennett for the night show which was watched by more than 300 spectators.

The event was held to support the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund which raises funds for Lord Mayor Councillor Mair Gibbs’s charity.

On the night more than £3,000 was chalked-up for Cardiac Risk in the Young as the players and models showed off a range of garments by Rowberry’s.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Mair Gibbs, said: “I am overwhelmed by people’s generosity.

“Although the accounts are yet to be finalised, early indications show that the fashion show raised in the region of £3,000 which I am delighted about.

“I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Swans and the Ospreys who escorted our models last night.

“They were good sports and added to the atmosphere.

“I am delighted that they supported us.  I would like to thank the Swans and in particular Lee Trundle, Sam Ricketts, Garry Monk, Izzy Iriekpen who gave up their time and Roberto Martinez for organising.

“Also, thanks to the Ospreys, to Huw Bennett, Richie Pugh and Leigh Davies.”

Spectator Helen Wheldon, of Blackpill, said: “The Swans looked fantastic.  They were all incredibly smart.”
