Our young favourites come alive in Christmas musical

South Wales Evening Post - 25th November 2005

By Alex Frith

Welcome to the 19th production of the Bumbles of Mumbles children’s Christmas Spectacular charity show at Grand Theatre, Swansea.  It runs from Wednesday to Saturday at 7pm with a 2pm matinee on Saturday.

It is amazing that in 1987 I first suggested to the editor of the South Wales Evening Post that we bring the Bumbles of Mumbles characters to life in a musical show at the prestigious Grand Theatre, Swansea – and here we are again, with another action-packed, sparkling musical starring our own young entertainers, whose only aim is to dance, sing and act to raise money for others less fortunate than themselves.

As most Bumbles of Mumbles fans know, you will never see the same scene twice.  Each year I settle down to write a brand new, nine-scene show, which allows the seashore folk to astound you with their musical adventures.

To open the show we have the Bernadette Jones School of Irish Dance.  Then in scene one we have the Spider’s Web who will amaze you with their colourful costumes and show how clever they are at making webs and helping other creatures.  Next we have Summer Rain with a special visit from Mother Nature.

And just wait until you see the Mice from Mumbles Hill attempting to leave Mumbles in Travels.  You will see a baby bird reunited with its mother, thanks to the Bumbles of Mumbles in The Birds.

Then applaud as Welsh dancers delight you with their dances as they put the Welsh flag to rights in The Welsh Flag.

Opening the second half of the show will be Shrek.  Then watch as King Arthur’s stone brings forth its magic and beautiful voices, with King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and Camelot.

Shooting Stars sees gymnasts twist and twirl on the Grand Theatre stage and when the Rebellious Boy proves that he can change, you will smile and congratulate him.

The Christmas Baby is all about new life, new hope and love as the angels serenade him in his mother’s arms at the nativity.  With dancers, singers, actors and the wonderful expertise on stage being provided by the Grand Theatre crew, who bring the Bumbles of Mumbles to life, you are in for an amazing show to put you in the Christmas mood!

More than 250 young people are waiting to entertain you in their colourful scenes.

Every penny raised will go to the Lord Mayor of the City and County of Swansea’s charity fund, Cardiac Risk in the Young, the Christiaan Stuart Smith Memorial fund as well as providing donations to organisations and groups which support you people with special educational needs.

I wish to thank our audiences for supporting us each year and allowing me the privilege to continue writing and producing the Bumbles of Mumbles Christmas Spectacular.

You can keep up with all the Bumbles of Mumbles stories each Friday in Young Edition in the south Wales Evening Post.
