Grieving mum backs calls for changes to inquests

The Northern Echo  -  1st August  2011

By Dani Webb

A National charity is using the plight of a student who died suddenly to campaign for changes in the way inquests are dealt with.

Jonathan Morgan will feature on a postcard issued by the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity to highlight the differences in inquests across England and the need for a chief coroner to oversee them.

The 21-year-old was found dead in his bed last year.  Teesside Coroner Michael Sheffield recorded an unascertained verdict.

His mother, Sue Ainsworth, of Hartburn, Stockton, believes her son succumbed to an undetected heart condition, but will never know because his heart was never analysed.

She is concerned that the lack of information has left her daughter, Rhiannon, 19, at risk from the same condition.

On the postcard, Jonathan's case will be compared to another victim of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, who had her heart tested and the results used to check siblings.

Mrs Ainsworth, 52, said: "I have so many unanswered questions.  My daughter and I cannot be screened properly because they do not know what to look for because the heart was not sent away.

I feel like it is some kind of postcode lottery.  Everyone should get the same treatment.  It should not matter where you live.

"There needs to be some changes.  A chief coroner would make sure all families get the same treatment.

"I should be grieving.  We will never get answers now, but changes need to be made so others don't suffer."

CRY, which offers to pay for any heart to be tested, is urging its supporters to send the postcard to their MP, to ask the government to consider introducing a chief coroner to oversee inquest services across the country and make coroners more accountable.

Alison Cox, of CRY, said: "This is an extremely important campaign.  The coroner's service needs reform and we need to bring it into the 21st Century.

"Sudden deaths are such a shock.  We need to do everything we can to prevent them happening to other family members.  We are not demanding something we cannot afford.  We are trying to look after bereaved families and we are fighting for them."
