A fun run is
being held in memory of a popular city DJ who died suddenly from a heart
condition he never knew he had.
Scott McCollin, also known as
DJ Untouchable, was 20 years old when he died from a Sudden Adult Death
Syndrome (SADS) while on holiday in Greece. His heart failed because of the
condition he had, but never knew about.
And Scott is not alone – SADS
kills eight seemingly fit, young people in the UK every week.
His family are holding the
Rainbow Fun Run for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a charity that helps
families that have lost loved ones, promotes heart screening and raising
awareness of the heart conditions that often go unnoticed until it is too
late.
“We didn’t know he had it,”
said his mother Linda Nesbitt.
“My husband died nearly
fourteen years ago from the same thing … we know it’s genetic, but we didn’t
before and never had Scott screened.
“We need to create awareness
and get people with similar conditions in the family to be screened.”
The five-kilometre run at
Willen Lane on Saturday May 29 will see Scott’s family and friends taking part
in his memory in an event that marks his 23rd birthday. And they
are keen for more people to take part.
“We want people to come along,
help raise a bit of money, and to make people more aware,” said Linda.
The walk will take place
between 11am and 1pm and anyone who would like to support can turn up on the
day.
