The recent CRY
heart screening held at the Macphail Centre on the 22nd
and 23rd June has proved to be a great
success, with 170 people between the ages of 14 and 35
being screened.
The CRY team - who
had travelled from all over the UK - consisted of seven
people: a cardiology consultant from St George’s
Hospital, University of London / University Hospital
Lewisham; four highly qualified technicians from the
universities of Cambridge, Manchester and Leeds; the CRY
Family Screening Manager; and a CRY Screening
Coordinator.
This screening was our third in total
and our second in Ullapool, following a first screening
event in Stornoway. These screenings have all been
funded from the Joanne Fotheringham Memorial Fund within
CRY. The funds have all been raised in Ullapool and the
surrounding districts in memory of Joanne, who died
suddenly from an undetected heart disorder in April
1997. This fund has given young people in the area the
opportunity to be screened for any possibility of an
abnormality in the heart.
We had members of the Ullapool and
District Junior Pipe Band who played on Saturday
morning. It was so fitting as Joanne was a former member
of the band.

The whole CRY team were overwhelmed
by the welcome and warmth of the village, the facilities
of the Macphail Centre and the amazing location of
Ullapool.
For those of you who missed the
opportunity of being screened this time, you will have
the chance again. Another screening has been booked for
24th and 25th May 2013 and the
booking links for this event will appear on the CRY
website closer to the event date.
