Sir Elton signs up to help duo

Western Gazette - 26th February 2004

By James Renwick

A pair of runners preparing for this year’s London Marathon were given a boost when pop supreme Sir Elton John backed their charity fund-raising cause.

Jan Vincent, aged 45, and Hilary Young, 40, of East Chinnock were preparing to host a charity auction at Ivel Barbarians Rugby Club in Yeovil tomorrow night.  They got the shock of their lives when Mrs Young’s husband Allan, a property surveyor, came home with two signed copies of Elton John’s Greatest Hits CD for them to put under the hammer.

“Mr Young was working at Holland, Park, the London residence of Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish.  He was telling David Furnish that his wife and a friend were running the London Marathon for Ability UK and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) when David said he would tell Elton about it and see if they could help,” said Mrs Vincent.

“He came back with two signed CD’s, which is no sacrifice, but it’s very nice of him.

These autographed CD’s go for a fortune on the Internet.”

Other items that will be going under the hammer at the charity auction are a helicopter ride, a trip in a stunt plane and holidays in Switzerland, Florida and Marbella.

The pair are running the London Marathon on Sunday 18 April and hope to raise more than £2,500 for their charities.
