The Northern Ireland U19 girls and U17 boys have had ECGs (electrocardiograms) carried out by the CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) Screening Service at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. Northern Ireland international, Jonny Evans has praised the Association’s Child Welfare Department for initiating the testing of the young players.

Finding the answers

In 1993 Howard English collapsed and died while playing a game of rugby.  The 32 year-old was a keen sportsman, fit, apparently healthy, and married with three young children.  Eleven years later the eldest of those three children, Sebastian, died in identical circumstances to his father.  He was just fifteen.

A new pathology lab offering hope to many bereaved families who have lost a child or loved one through sudden cardiac death opened at the Royal Brompton Hospital on Friday (7 March 2008). Funded by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), the new fast-track pathology service will turnaround results within approximately two weeks providing answers to grieving families who would have previously had to wait up to 18 months.
