Peaks are scaled in memory of Lewis

Yorkshire Evening Post  -  13th July 2011

By Mark Lavery

Talented teenage cyclist Lewis Barry's sudden death more than a year ago had a lasting impact on a Leeds community.

The 15-year-old, of Garforth, died in his sleep last June after his heart apparently stopped beating during the night.

Fundraising events held in his memory have included a marathon bike ride organised by British Cycling, when dozens of people cycled from Manchester to Leeds.

Family friend Dave Roberts, 43, put his best foot forward at the weekend to scale Yorkshire's three peaks, Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, to raise cash for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Dave - and Glamis Close neighbour Lorraine Russell, 42, and her 13-year-old son Luke - completed the Yorkshire Dales walking challenge well within the 12 hour target to raise over £1,655 for the charity.

Dave's son Tim, 15, played football with Lewis at Green Lane Primary School, Garforth, and Garforth Villa FC.

And Dave's wife Linda, 49, is a teacher at Green Lane Primary School, where Lewis's mother Carol works as a teaching assistant.

Dave, a self-employed courier, said: "I knew Lewis from when the was a little lad.  He was a lovely, lovely lad.  What happened was just terrible and everyone was absolutely gutted.  I just wanted to do something in his memory, to do this walk and try and raise some money for the charity.

Dave said the walk was tough, but he managed to finish in just under nine hours.

Lewis, who was a member of the Aire Valley Race Team had been cycling seriously since he was 11 and had represented Yorkshire.

He was expected to make the Great Britain team when he was older.  His family has a long history of success in cycling.

Dad Mark took part in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and mum Carol is a former national cycling champion.  Lewis's grandfather Peter was also a successful cyclist and his aunt, Mandy Jones, won the World Championships Road Race in 1982.

Lewis had been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat but it was apparently not regarded as serious by doctors.
