Thank you very much for signing up for the 15th CRY Durham Walk on Sunday 6th October. We are so grateful to all our supporters who take part in the walk, whether it’s for the first time or as a regular. We know that some of our supporters have been every year since the first walk in 2010!

Thanks to all of the CRY families, individuals and organisations that have supported the walk, over £83,000 has been raised from the event since it started in 2010. Crucial awareness of CRY’s work has also been spread into communities across the UK in the build up to the event, as well as with the many people in Durham on the day.

Everything you need for the day can be found on this page, including how to find us, maps and route information, and downloads. Click on the icons below to find out more!

On the day..

When should I arrive?

Walkers can arrive from 9:30am ready for when the walk starts at 11am. Please arrive at Durham Amateur Rowing Club in Green Lane at least 30 minutes before the start time but please do not arrive before 9:30am.

Checking In

The check-in desk will be open from 9:30am. Please do not arrive before this time. As you have registered online, you will have received a ticket to your email address for each walker. Please remember to bring this with you on the day as you will need to hand this in to the check-in desk. Tickets can also be scanned from an email on your smartphone.

Each walker will need a ticket including children. If you have registered online with a group, one person can register all group members by handing in all of the tickets on the day.

If you have not received your tickets or are having trouble printing them, please email [email protected] or call 01737 363222 by 5pm on the Friday before the walk to inform us. After this time, if you have not received your ticket(s), you can give your name(s) at the check-in desk.

It is very important that we know who has turned up for the event. If additional people turn up, who haven’t previously registered, they should also report to the check-in desk with their £15 registration fee. Directions, spare back signs and T-Shirts will be available at the check-in desk.

After you have checked in, please await announcements. Food and drink will be available to purchase before the walk.

What should I wear?

  • Make sure you wear comfortable shoes.
  • Check the weather forecast and, if it’s likely to rain, take a raincoat or other waterproof clothing and an umbrella.
  • Bring warm clothing with you as it can get quite chilly in the autumn.

What should I bring with me?

  • Water or a soft drink. CRY will also be providing water before the walk.
  • A packed lunch or snack, especially if you have children with you.
  • There are public toilets near Durham Cathedral and Durham Market Place, but please ensure that you use the facilities at the Rowing Club before you start the walk.
  • Dogs are welcome to attend and enjoy the walk. However, due to health and safety regulations and the rowing club rules, dogs must be kept outside and under control.

During the Walk

  • Be safe. The route will be marshalled but: Please stick to the marshalled route and stay off the roads, unless it is necessary to use them and they are part of the route. Look out for traffic and cyclists.
  • Please ensure that all children are accompanied by an adult at all times and that pets are kept on a lead.
  • Please stay away from the edge of the river bank and please do not jump in the river.
  • Please do not drop litter and please consider other people who are also walking along the riverside.

Getting there..

By Car

For participants travelling by car, Durham is easily accessible from the North-South A1(M) motorway and from the west by A68 and A69 roads.

(From the A1) – leave the A1(M) at junction 62, then at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A690, signposted Durham A690, Consett(A691). At Gilesgate roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A690, signposted City Centre A690.

At the next roundabout take the 1st exit onto New Elvet, signposted Coxhoe, Bowburn (A177). Take the second left onto Old Elvet, signposted Courts, Durham Prison, Register Office. From Old Elvet take the second left onto Green Lane.

Once in Green Lane, you will see a big blue and yellow sign for Durham City Rugby Football Club, on the right hand side of the road. Turn right just before the sign and continue past HMRC Tax Office, following the road all the way round to the end where there is a limited amount of overflow parking by the rugby pitch. Once you have passed the rugby club, the road then narrows to a fork. Keep to the left – the road to the right is marked private access.

To reach Durham Amateur Rowing Club and the start point continue past the cricket club and follow the road until you reach the end of Green Lane. Approximately 20 parking spaces will be available at the rowing club.

For those using satellite navigation the destination is Green Lane, Durham, DH1 3JU.
