Alison Cox MBE, CRY Founder comments on the death of Ray Wilkins MBE, CRY Patron;
“On behalf of everyone involved with CRY, I would like to express our deep sadness at the news of Ray Wilkins MBE who died earlier today and to share our condolences with his family.
“Ray had been a loyal and supportive Patron of CRY for over a decade, lending his name and his high profile to our organisation, helping us to raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death. Ray represented CRY at fundraising events as well as attending our Parliamentary Reception and, as with all of CRY’s Patrons from the world of sport, we were always so grateful for his time and support.
“Our thoughts are with all those who knew Ray – family, friends, former team-mates and those young players whom he mentored during his long and successful career. He will be greatly missed.”
Ray became a Patron of CRY in 2007. Upon becoming a patron Ray commented “I am very pleased to have been asked to become a Patron of CRY. I am aware of young people dying suddenly whilst playing football and taking part in other activities, however, 12 a week is a really shocking total.
With my background in football, I hope that I am going to be able to help CRY raise awareness of the conditions that can suddenly kill fit and healthy young people and have some impact on reducing the number of these terrible tragedies”.
