CRY’s research is preventing tragedies by transforming the way we identify young people with cardiac conditions.

In order for us to understand the best way to identify those at risk, our research focuses on improving our understanding of

  • Methods to identify those at risk of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD)
    • Primary prevention (cardiac screening)
    • Secondary prevention (CPR/AED)
  • How to conduct cardiac screening
    • Different methods of screening (e.g. Pre Participation Questionnaire/Medical Questionnaire vs. ECG vs. ECG & ECHO
    • How to improve the efficiency of different screening methods (reducing false positives)
  • How to assess symptoms
    • Which symptoms are most closely linked with undiagnosed cardiac conditions and sudden death
  • How to assess family history
    • Assessing the role of the family history as part of the medical assessment/ screening procedure

CRY’s research programme has been led for over 20 years by one of the worlds leading experts in young sudden cardiac death, CRY’s Cardiologist, Professor Sanjay Sharma. In 2017, Professor Sharma led a team of world experts to publish an international guideline for how ECGs in young people should be interpreted. This has been informed by 20 years of CRY funded research. This will not only have a massive impact on the way young people are tested, but also the number of young lives which will be saved because of this work.
