The College plays a vital role in supporting this community service which is brought to North Devon through community fundraising in memory of Martyn Luckett, who passed away from a sudden cardiac death in 2005 at just 19.
Martyn has a band of people who all raise funds in his memory to enable this service to benefit the young in the area. The funds are raised by running half and full marathons, cycling, spinning, boxing and other various events led by Martyn’s Family.
Charlotte, Martyn’s Sister, who is also CRY’s North Devon representative is passionate about spreading the word about CRY’s message and ensuring her Brother did not die in vain.
Charlotte said: “My Family do not wish for anyone to have the heartache we’ve had since losing Martyn, especially when frustratingly most deaths can be avoided by a simple and non invasive ECG. This provides the passion behind our mission to continuously fundraise.”
Over the weekend, 200 young people were screened and nine people were referred by the cardiologist at CRY.
Charlotte’s thoughts on this are mixed: “On one hand I do not wish to see anyone referred and that everyone is fit and healthy, but on the other hand it shows how vital the service is and recharges the fundraising batteries as each weekend costs just under £11,000.”
