Call for young football players to have their hearts screened after death of Charlie Slocombe

Times Local News, 9th August 2019

26 year old Charlie Slocombe of Crowborough Athletic (and previously Tonbridge Angels) collapsed while playing a 5-a-side match and later died in hospital. In previous years triallist Junior Dian and Under-18 player Jack Maddams have both passed away from undiagnosed heart conditions.

Players, and Tonbridge Angels former chairman (Jack’s father), Roger Maddams, urge young athletes to get their hearts screened.

Tonbridge Angels have been raising money, more than £35,000 since 2016, to hold heart screenings at its Longmead Stadium organised by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). To date they have screened over 1,100 young athletes aged 14 to 35. The last screening they held was in January and they are £1,200 away from having enough funds to book the next one.
