12 Dips for CRY – Orkney

Rishka Magowan, and her sisters Halina and Alusha, are raising money for the John Magowan Memorial Fund. Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions.

Rishka’s husband, John Magowan (31.05.1979 – 31.05.2009) died on his 30th Birthday from an undiagnosed heart condition.

To raise funds and awareness of CRY, we will be swimming (or “dipping”) at 12 different beaches around Orkney – one every month of 2011. Dipping means we have to get our shoulders under the water and swim a few strokes, at least, whatever the temperature!

These are the beaches we will be dipping at: January – Skaill, February – Birsay, March – Marwick, April – Evie, May – Inganess, June – Scapa, July – Cornisquoy, August – Dingieshowe, September – Sands of Wright, October – Waulkmill, November – Swanbister, December – Warebeth.

CRY is a charity that works with cardiologists and family doctors to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young by establishing good practice and screening facilities devoted to significantly reducing the frequency of young sudden cardiac death throughout the UK. They also provide support to bereaved families.

For more information about the dips, or to make a donation, please see www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/nhoj

You can also check our progress and get updates through the “12 dips for CRY – Orkney” page on Facebook. This will include updated photos and plans for when and where the dips will be. A few people have expressed an interest in joining us – if you want to come along you are more than welcome!

The final dip will be at Warebeth Beach on 31.12.10 – with a party afterwards. Updates on Facebook nearer the time!magowandip2
