Mr John Lundy, The Divisional Representative for Cardiac Risk in The Young (CRY) in Northern Ireland, was pleased today to accept a cheque for £2000 raised by the pupils and friends of Dominican College as part of the 2007 Annual Sponsored Walk.

CRY was one of a number of designated Dominican charities for the 2007-2008 school year and Mr Lundy explained that he was “absolutely delighted by the generosity of the school” in helping to raise awareness and support for CRY.

CRY, a Charity with local patrons such as Mark Carruthers and Pat Jennings, was founded in 1996 and aims to provide medical information on the most common causes of unexplained cardiac deaths in young people.

CRY will offer screenings for any physically active young person from 14-35 years of age and Mr Lundy stressed to the Dominican community that they can freely avail of the screening clinic in Jordanstown.

He explained that his involvement in CRY was triggered by a personal tragedy a number of years ago and that in the UK every week at least 8 “apparently fit and healthy” young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. He pointed out that, whilst in the UK screening is not mandatory, all those involved in competitive sports should consider screening.
