A Ramsgate family on a mission to raise funds and awareness for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in memory of a young man who died aged just 23 will be holding an event next month.
Talented golfer David Smith led a healthy life with a passion for his sport and using the gym. But in August last year the young construction worker lost his life after suffering a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.
The former Ellington & Hereson student had awoken in the night on August 4, 2024, when he suddenly became ill. Despite the efforts of a family member, and then paramedics, performing CPR, David could not be saved.
His cousin Sara Hamilton said: “He had just started his new job in construction about two months before and he absolutely loved it. He had started playing golf when he was three and had a few hole in ones and cost his dad a few pennies growing up.
“He did lots of tournaments and played at The Belfry in Scotland and was a member of North Foreland golf club. Golf was always his passion.
“He also joined the gym and would go three to five times a week. He was into his fitness and that’s why it was such a shock.
“He did have asthma but he was a young lad, went to the gym, had a good job, he never thought something so tragic would happen.
“He was young and fit and that is the most horrible part of it all.”
