At the inaugural Alex Reid Sheffield High School Memorial Netball Tournament last Saturday Woodhouse Grove took the brand new trophy after a great morning of this sixth form competition.

The U19 tournament was set up to provide competitive play to start the season for school and college teams in memory of Alex Reid, one of the SHS netball team, who sadly died two years ago from sudden adult death syndrome. The atmosphere of the morning was very relaxed off court with a social gathering for hot chocolate before the games began.

During the event where local teams such as Wickersley, Silverdale and of course SHS as well as teams who had travelled from Nottingham, Loughborough and Bradford played a high level of netball, there was also the chance to buy CRY merchandise, cakes and drinks for CRY.The total raised by tournament entries, refreshments and a shooting competition of ‘Killer’ was over £450 for the charity.

CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is a charity set up to research sudden adult death syndrome as well as provide screening opportunities for young adults to try to prevent this happening.

The trophy was presented to Woodhouse Grove, who won all their matches, and silver medals to the runners up Sheffield High School by Heather Reid, headmistress Valerie Dunsford and ex-England/Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martin.

The event was a great success and all the schools and colleges are looking forward to playing this every year.
