Anne Evans held screening day in memory of daughter Jayne, who tragically died of a heart defect.

The group raised the money under the name of โ€œJayneโ€™s Memorial Fundโ€, with funds going to the charity โ€œCardiac Risk in the Youngโ€ (CRY).

Its main organiser is Anne Evans, whose daughter, Jayne, had a heart defect, and died aged 12 while playing netball in 1988.

At Llandudno Junction Memorial Hall on Sunday (August 20), 90 youngsters underwent heart screening.

Heart screeningโ€, or cardiac screening, is offered by CRY to those aged between 14 and 35, and can help to diagnose most abnormalities of the heart.

Anne said: โ€œIt was absolutely wonderful; the day was such a success, and went so smoothly. The community all joined in.

โ€œWe set out to achieve something, and we really achieved it. It was brilliant. The people from CRY said it was an absolute brilliant number (of people who came for heart screenings).

โ€œI believe that one person was told that the right side of their heart was enlarged, so that was something that will obviously be followed up because of what we did on Sunday.

โ€œThat makes it very much worthwhile.

โ€œThe team were all absolutely brilliant; I canโ€™t thank them enough for all of the work that theyโ€™ve. The community have been so supportive, as well; it makes you a bit overwhelmed, really.โ€

The group surpassed the ยฃ10,000 target, so are putting funds left over towards next yearโ€™s event, which has already been pencilled in for August 18, 2024.

More fundraisers will take place prior to then, with this yearโ€™s events including taking on the worldโ€™s fastest zip line at Zip World over Penrhyn Quarry, bingo, jumble sales, raffles and more.

Nikki Owen, another of the groupโ€™s main fundraisers, was a school friend of Jayneโ€™s.

She previously told the Pioneer: โ€œIโ€™ve always kept in touch with Jayneโ€™s family, and you see people like footballers pass away (from heart problems).

โ€œIโ€™ve got three kids of my own, and even younger people, like Jayne herself, pass away while playing sport.
