A couple from Frome are calling on the public to help them raise money for life-saving equipment.
Shirley and Dave Wort, from the Critchill Estate, hope to be able to buy a new defibrillatror in time for the opening of the town’s new community hospital in June 2008.
Mr and Mrs Wort’s son Julian, who was a builder, died in his sleep seven years ago because of a rare heart condition.
He was 28 and had shown symptoms of an illness earlier in his life, but doctors did not realise he had an enlarged heart muscle and instead thought it was asthma.
Since his death, Mr and Mrs Wort have campaigned for the Julian Wort Memorial Fund and the national charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). They have raised £22,228.
Mrs Wort said: “That has enabled us, through CRY, to donate two electrocardiograph machines: one to Frome Medical Practice and another to the minor injuries department at Frome Victoria Hospital.
“We have also donated a defibrillator to the minor injuries department and now they would like another, which will cost £3,000.
“We have almost £1,000 in the fund now, so we are trying to raise another £2,000 before the new hospital opens.
“To do this we are appealing to any clubs, pubs or organisations in Frome that would like to support and help us in our fundraising once again.”
Anyone who can help Mr and Mrs Wort should telephone 01374 471 309.
