Jo Whiley rarely shies away from a sporting challenge – especially for charity – but given her painful history on a bike it is perhaps a little surprising that she has stuck her hand up to ride in this month’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46.
The BBC Radio 2 DJ admits that she is a cycling “novice”, having not ridden for the best part of three decades since she suffered a nasty accident as a teenager.
For the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46, Whiley will be raising money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), after a friend recently lost her boyfriend when a heart defect was not spotted.
“He was fit and healthy and no one had any idea that he had cardiac issues,” she says. “He was out for a run, and then he had a heart attack and died. He was only 21.”
