They've done it! Gruelling heat, bee-stings and blisters weren't enough to deter an Ilfracombe mum and daughter from completing a very special sponsored walk.
Teresa Chew and her daughter Kira, 11, trekked 10 miles across Malta during a family holiday in memory of Teresa's children Rachel Haigh and Jason Chew.
Both died suddenly from the rare heart condition viral myocarditis. Rachel, eight years ago at the age of 14 and Jason last year at the age of 17.
Teresa was joined by sister Linda and niece Kelly on the walk, as the live on the island, along with two of Linday's friends.
She said before setting out: "I just want to do something positive, to remember Rachel and Jason and for the charities who helped us so much."
Teresa trained for the walk, but admitted it got harder as the clouds vanished and the sun climbed higher.
"Kira did as much as she could, but she was exhausted and had to join her dad, Steve in the support jeep for a while.
"But she joined us again for the finish and I reckon she did about three-quarters of the walk, which is brilliant considering she's only 11 and not used to walking that far."
Teresa's sister Linda had a close encounter with a bee, but despite the sting to her neck, was also determined to soldier on.
And on reaching their destination, at Bugibba Square she admitted everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
the family have raised around £500 which will be divided between two local bereavement charities, Families in Grief (FIG) and Cruse, as well as CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) the national charity which provided specialist screening for Teresa and her other children.
Donations can still be made at a bank or online, via a special account set up for the event: sort code 11-02-94, account number 00823913.
Alison Berridge from FIG said: "I'm delighted to hear the walk went well for them. What an achievement.
"They have certainly created something positive out of their grief, together as a family, I am so proud of them and their positive contribution, some very big steps were taken along that 10 miles."
