The Outwood Forgers Perform at the Red Lion

The Outwood Forgers performed at the Red Lion pub in Turners Hill on the 2nd September to raise funds and awareness for CRY. Their performance raised £109.72 in donations.

“Following their successful fund raising gig for CRY at the South of England Show, that band of ne’er-do-wells, The Outwood Forgers, were once more hammering out an eclectic mix of Irish and English traditional (and other!) songs and tunes at the Red Lion in Turners Hill on the afternoon of 2nd September. The gig coincided with the opening day of the first Beer Festival to be held at this hostelry and judging by the many reports praising the quality of ale and cider this will surely not be the last.

This delightful atmospheric pub is owned by the famous Sussex brewery, Harvey’s of Lewes, and managed in the capable hands of Graham and Lorna who welcome all comers with genuine warmth and hospitality. A trait which we think you will agree can be hard to find these days.

The pub building is reputed to have a history dating back to the 16th century (ish!) and located in the heart of the community and thankfully unspoilt by modern extensions. As well as a wide range of real ales and cider, home cooked food is served at lunchtimes and a delightful garden area affords a perfect setting to relax and enjoy a drink or two.

The Outwood Forgers are a band of local musicians who are passionate about preserving and publically performing the traditional songs and tunes of these islands. Traditional (or folk) music may sometimes seem a bit archaic so the band often incorporates contemporary words and effects to get over their message. Music hall and rock are also within their repertoire and their enjoyment of performing combined with a sense of humour is infectious.

In order to promote a wider understanding of folk music the band provide song sheets for the audience to join in by singing, humming or gently tapping their feet! All contributions received for the song sheets were donated to CRY and we are delighted to report that a healthy sum of £109.72 was raised.

Look out for further gigs in the near future.”
