Parents Honoured by Pride of Birmingham Awards for Campaign to Increase Heart Screenings in Memory of Son, Daniel Hughes

After losing their 28 year old son Daniel to an undiagnosed heart defect four years ago, Sue and David Hughes established the Daniel Hughes Heart Screening Fund which aims to allow at least 200 young people access to heart screenings annually. So far, Sue and David, along with their daughter Kim, have raised more than £215,000, financing the screening of 1204 young people; 37 of them thus made aware that they required further tests or treatment. Their efforts have been recognised and honoured by the Pride of Birmingham Awards on a night which David described as, “very emotional”. “I would, of course, prefer that Dan were here,” He stated, “but I can’t change a thing and so we have to raise as much awareness as possible.” The couple are still fundraising for more screening facilities. “We just need to try and get funding in place,” David said. “It’s absolutely vital that we increase these services.” Read More
