Remembering Alex – Great Orme Walk

An athletic fit 30 year old, Alex suffered a cardiac arrest whilst out cycling on a sunny afternoon on 31 March 2019.

In celebration of Alex’s life I am walking 30 miles (6 laps) of the Great Orme, Llandudno over 3 days from 25 September leading up to his birthday on 27 September. One mile for each day of his life and one day for each decade. Each day’s walk will be a continuous 2 laps of the Orme. Starting at the Pier, walking up to the summit, following the road down to West Shore and back to the Pier for the second lap. Each day’s walk covers approx 11 miles and an estimated 4 hours walking.

Alex enjoyed cycling on the Orme in its magnificent setting and I remember a couple of times walking up to meet him at the Summit Cafe for coffee. In 2013 he was really pleased to win the Great Orme Cycle Race. It seems a fitting place to look back on happy memories, pay tribute to a wonderful son, and raise money for the vital research and screening carried out by CRY.

Earlier planned group events had to be postponed under lock-down, setting back our fund raising efforts. It is still not clear when we will be able to re-arrange these events. Through this solo walk we hope to re-start building the fund and make a valuable contribution to the total sum needed to hold a bespoke screening event for young people in North Wales.

Update 27.9.20: Remembering Alex – Final day of our Great Orme Memorial Walk. The sun shone and seals swam in the coves as we completed the last 10 miles marking Alex’s birthday.
Alex’s third decade was varied and action packed – from motor racing to setting up his own cycle distribution business and from running/triathlon to cycle racing. Not a moment nor opportunity wasted.
Alex you truly were a wonder and made us very proud of you.
Love and miss you every waking moment and hope you are at peace in your special place of beauty.
Special thanks to Dan & Jess Evans for coming over to give us a lovely send off yesterday morning; to Alwyn & Mairwen for their great company on those last two laps of the Orme; and to the Reception Party of Alex’s Anglesey friends who drove over to greet us with a round of applause as we arrived back at the end of the walk. A lovely surprise, demonstrating again what great friends Alex had.
The support and encouragement we have received from friends near and far, family, neighbours past and present has been overwhelming. You are all stars and your support has been invaluable.
A huge “thank you” to all who donated. Between you all the walk has so far raised £1,420 for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). This is a massive boost to funding their cardiac screening programme, vital in identifying young people aged 14-35 yrs who may be at risk. Our Just Giving page will remain open to receive any post event donations. www.just giving/fundraising/rememberingalex-gtormewalk
I know Alex would be sending you his love and thanks. xx💖💖
