When Charlotte Adams died in 2014 at just 23 years old from an undiagnosed heart condition, her Mother – Kate Bome, pledged to help others avoid such unbearable tragedy by raising funds in memory of her daughter.
‘The Charlotte Adams Memorial Fund’ had, before this weekend, raised over £60K, enabling local Heart Screening Events to take place in conjunction with C.R.Y (Cardiac Risk in the Young), working to diagnose otherwise unidentifiable heart conditions, most common between the ages of 14 and 35. Kate’s fundraising efforts in memory of her daughter have also funded 2 defibrillators, located at Great Totham Primary School and Great Totham Village Hall.
As of their most recent fundraising event – ‘Remembering Charlotte’ – a black-tie ball held at The Lion Inn in Boreham with over 160 guests on Saturday 23rd November 2019, Kate Bome can now add a further £10K to her fundraising total, taking it to an incredible £71,268K overall.
The event was hosted by comedian Paul Eastwood whose familiar face and quick wit wowed the audience. With live music from female vocalist Keeley Smith and entertainment from DJ Jon Colley – the event went with a swing. A beautiful tribute to Charlotte Adams was played during the evening, bringing tears to many eyes, as photographs of Charlotte’s life were shared on a big screen. Charlotte was a truly beautiful person – inside and out.
Kate’s work with C.R.Y enables simple tests such as ECGs to be carried out on young people between the age of 14 and 35 to detect otherwise symptom-free heart abnormalities. Every week in the UK alone, at least 12 young people under the age of 35 die from an undiagnosed heart condition. Something The Charlotte Adams Memorial Fund is striving to combat.
As well as working full-time at Great Totham Primary School (for the past 22 years) and running The Charlotte Adams Memorial Fund, Kate also runs ‘Time to Sparkle’ – where you can purchase bespoke sparkly glassware with all profits going to Charlotte’s fund.
Kate has also recently joined forces with The Mulberry Spa in Wickham Bishops to fundraise for a 3rd Defibrillator unit for the local area. The lifesaving Defibrillator, which will cost almost £2K, will be placed on The Mitre / The Mulberry Spa building in Wickham Bishops in the centre of the village. The Mulberry Spa is kick starting its fundraising with a Sparkly Christmas Event on 11th December 2019. There will be some amazing raffle prizes available (donated by The Spa) as well as prizes supplied by Time to Sparkle.
Kate will be holding the annual C.R.Y Cake Sale at Great Totham Primary School on Tuesday 26th November 2019. This event alone has raised over £3700 in the last 4 years and is well supported by parents, staff and friends of the school. Funds from this will also contribute to the defibrillator.
Kate, who recently won the Inspirational Adult Award at the Chelmsford for You Chr1stmas Awards, and was rewarded by being asked to switch on Chelmsford’s Christmas Lights said: “I am so grateful to everyone who enabled us to raise such an incredible amount of money at this year’s Remembering Charlotte fundraiser. This year’s event was particularly poignant as it was held on the 5th anniversary of Charlotte’s death. To raise £10K was fantastic and we can’t wait to put the money to work to help save lives.”
A
significant amount of the fundraising this year was thanks to ‘Charlie’s
Corporate Angels’ – the local businesses that support Kate in her effort to
raise funds. One of her Corporate Angels – Resort Marketing International Ltd,
donated 3 x All Inclusive Caribbean Holidays to the Elite Island Resorts and
Casa de Campo, raising over £4K
on the night! Directors Colin Pegler and Paula Whitehead have supported Kate’s
efforts for many years, donating previous holiday prizes as well as taking part
in fundraising events of their own. The most recent of which, was Managing
Director, Colin Pegler’s Travel Crusade across Europe, dressed as a banana with
his team ‘the Caribbean Bananas’ where they raised over £5K for the charity.
C.R.Y kindly donated a T-shirt to the Remembering Charlotte event, signed by one of their patrons – Sir Steve Redgrave, which will be auctioned off separately to add to the £10K total…
Kate receives support from people she calls her ‘Charlie’s Angels’ – friends of hers and of Charlotte who continually help with events and fundraising.
