Heart tests for footballers at this year's World Cup have been welcomed by a charity which campaigns for screening.
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) was pleased to hear that the Federation of International Football Associations has recommended that all football federations have their players screened for potential heart defects before they attend the upcoming World Cup.
But CRY also warned that there is still a long way to go to save the eight young people who die every week from unexplained cardiac death, on or off the sports field.
It says screening has proved to be an effective preventative measure for reducing the number of fatalities in sportsmen.
As The Citizen reported in October, young dad Justin Meek died in his sleep five years ago, with no warning. His family, from Mitcheldean, was devastated.
His mum, Ann, has joined a campaign for more screening of young people for Sudden Death Syndrome.
Screening is now mandatory for all England junior national rugby academies.
