Screening event in Garstang funded in memory of Matthew Hesmondhalgh

A free heart test is being offered for teenagers and young adults in memory of a man who died aged just 22. Matthew Hesmondhalgh, from Garstang, died suddenly in 2011.

According to Wyre Council, their fundraising efforts in his memory have allowed hundreds of young people to be screened, with some referred for treatment and even for surgery. In 2019, 101 young people were screened at Garstang Medical Practice.

Continuing their legacy, a new screening has been funded in memory of Matthew Hesmondhalgh and sponsored by Glasdon UK. It will be held on Saturday, June 28, and the following day. It will be open to anyone aged between 14 and 35.

A memorial fund has been set up by Matthew’s family to help charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death through supporting CRY’s screening programme. The aim of this is to fund screening of young people within the community.
