Students' fun raises vital cash for heart research charity

Myerscough College students have been busy raising money for charity in a week of fun and festivities for the college's annual RAG Week.

This year they decided to donate all their proceedings to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and managed to raise an excellent £1,018.50.

Several fun filled activities were planned throughout the week including charity waxing, live entertainment, a charity barbeque, banner competitions and a large cake sale. Students dressed in costumes also held a collection at the gates of the College in an effort to raise further funds for the cause.

The two biggest competitions of the week were the 'Jelly Bean Competition' and the 'Big RAG Raffle' which were both open to staff and students. Nathaniel Davies was the winner of the former, with his guess of 790 being only three away from the 793 jelly beans contained in the jar. Myerscough Principal, Ann Turner, was on hand to draw the winners of the raffle and several excellent prizes were won highlighted by the first prize, a PC Notebook, which was won by Diane Paton from the Equine Events Department.

Myerscough College's Student President, Dan Clarke, said: "Yet again RAG Week has proved a big success and we have managed to raise an excellent amount of money for a very worthwhile cause. This year we made a big effort to get the Myerscough staff more involved as well as the studentsand we feel that this has made the week even more enjoyable."

CRY is a charity that was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Sudden Cardiac Death. Every week in the UK, at least 12 young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions, many of these people are assumed to be fit and healthy.
