These are my bonus years” – How a heart screening at 16 saved Harry’s life

Harry Jenkins, now 22, from Leigh-on-Sea, was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition at 16 during a free screening by the Carli Lansley Foundation. Doctors discovered he had two abnormal electrical pathways in his heart, requiring urgent surgery. Without it, he could have died—Harry now calls these his “bonus years.”

The foundation, set up by Karl Lansley after his wife Carli (36) died suddenly from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS), has screened 2,500 young people in Southend, detecting 120 potential heart conditions.

At their latest event, 5 out of 106 attendees were referred for further tests. Karl’s charity also provides CPR and defibrillator training, with 2025 screenings fully booked and 2026 dates already announced.
