Barbara Keeley MP joined 220 women of all ages in taking part in the Swinton Running Club’s City of Salford Women’s 5-mile Run at the weekend. Barbara took part in the event in order to raise money and support for the charity CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young.

In running the race for the charity, Barbara was showing her support for the family of Amy Williams who died in her sleep from a heart condition aged eleven years old. After Amy’s death in April 2005 her family, who live in the Worsley constituency, decided to raise funds for the charity.

Barbara Keeley said:

“After hearing of Amy’s tragic death earlier this year, I thought about running in the Salford Women’s Run to raise money and publicity for the charity CRY. Money raised for CRY goes to help research the issue of sudden deaths arising from heart problems, especially among young children.

“The Charity CRY wants to raise awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young and of Sudden Death Syndrome. They also offer support to families who have suffered the loss of a child or young person under 35 from sudden cardiac death. he more that can be done to contribute to medical research and screening for cardiac abnormalities in the young the better. “I ran the race in memory of Amy and hope that we can raise more funds and publicity for this charity to help them eliminate the risk of cardiac arrests among the young in future.”
