Daniel Joshua Blackman
Dan didn’t like his own company; he was a people person & got on with everyone. He was cheeky & fun to be around. He would help anyone: a work colleague with an unpleasant task, a family member with a landscaping makeover, a friend with a broken-down motorbike or a stranger with a flat tyre. Dan loved animals & they would gravitate to him. Dan was a passionate supporter of the England Rugby Union team; he was fascinated with British steam locomotives from childhood & was a member of a local society of model engineers, he enjoyed gaming on his Xbox & had an eclectic taste in music – you never knew what you would be listening to on his playlist!
Sunday 23rd June 2019 started out as just an ordinary day; it ended up being the most devastating day of our lives.
Dan was due to take a steam competency test, he was excited about being able to drive a scale model steam locomotive at the engineering society’s open weekend – he never got to take the test. He was at the home that he shared with his partner, she had left for work & he had started doing some household chores.
Dan had promised to let his dad know how he had got on with the competency test, by the afternoon there was still no word from him. After a few messages & voicemails with no responses his mum decided to go have a chat with him about his poor communication skills.
Dan had collapsed at home as he was collecting his wallet & car keys ready to leave the house. Another 5 minutes & he would have been driving on the M27 motorway. There was nothing to be done to save him.
Dan died of an un-diagnosed heart condition – Sudden Arrythmia Death Syndrome (SADS). He was 27 years old – active, healthy, never ill & had no symptoms. As a family we are committed to raise awareness of Young Sudden Cardiac Death & fundraise to help provide free ECG heart screening for young people in the UK.
This memorial fund has been set up by the family to help CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death, support those affected, support CRY’s screening programme and fund research and pathology.
