CRY in Parliament

Since CRY was founded in 1995, significant progress has been made in identifying and managing young people at risk of sudden cardiac death. This progress has been driven by the tireless determination of bereaved families who have campaigned for change following tragedy in their own families. Their voices have inspired and worked alongside hundreds of MPs who have supported CRY, many also motivated by experiences of loss affecting their families, friends, or constituents. Continued support from MPs remains vital to ensure UK policies reflect best practice and that the needs of affected families and young people stay at the heart of decision-making.

Our priorities in Parliament

A National Strategy to Prevent Young Sudden Cardiac Death

We urge MPs to support a national, consistent approach to preventing sudden cardiac deaths in the young, based on accurate data and evidence.

Better Access to Heart Screening for Young People

CRY promotes wider availability of simple, effective heart screenings for 14–35 year olds, helping identify hidden conditions before tragedy strikes.

Clear, Evidence Based Government Guidelines

We call on policymakers to improve and align national guidelines so that young people receive consistent, effective care and early diagnosis.

Raising Awareness Among MPs

Through events at Westminster and direct engagement, we help MPs understand the impact of young sudden cardiac death and how they can support change.

Support for Families and Better Post Death Pathways

We highlight the need for specialist cardiac pathology services and clear pathways, so families get answers and support after losing a loved one.

How CRY works with MPs

We work closely with Members of Parliament to help prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young people and ensure families receive the support they need. Here’s how we do it:

We Raise Awareness in Westminster

CRY hosts parliamentary events and drop in sessions to help MPs understand the impact of young sudden cardiac death and learn more about the importance of heart screening and early detection.

We Encourage MPs to Champion Change

MPs are invited to support our mission by joining the CRY All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and backing calls for a National Strategy to prevent young sudden cardiac death. Many MPs have already pledged their support to help drive policy change that saves young lives.

We Share Evidence and Research

CRY regularly presents new research findings and screening data to parliamentarians so they can make informed decisions about guidelines, screening policies, and referral pathways for young people.

How you can help

1. Ask Your MP to sign the Pledge to establish a National Strategy

Every week, 12 young people die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions — yet the true scale of the problem is often underestimated. CRY is calling for a National Strategy to prevent young sudden cardiac death, and your MP’s support can help make it happen. Encouraging them to sign the pledge strengthens the push for consistent, evidence based policy across the UK.

2. Encourage Your MP to Join the Cardiac Risk in the Young All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG)

The Cardiac Risk in the Young APPG gives families a voice in Parliament and keeps young sudden cardiac death firmly on the political agenda. Inviting your MP to join the Group helps ensure they stay informed, engaged, and ready to support policy change that saves lives.

3. Share Your Story With Your MP

Personal stories make a powerful impact. Whether you’ve lost someone, been diagnosed with a cardiac condition, or supported someone through screening, meeting your MP can help them understand why early detection and consistent care matter. CRY’s work shows that MPs often become supporters after hearing from families directly.

4. Support CRY in Your Community

By speaking to your MP about local screening events, awareness campaigns, or support groups, you can help strengthen CRY’s impact where you live. Many MPs champion CRY’s mission because of individuals and families who raise the issue in their constituencies
